Re: rpm gauge trouble

One is for the Light, One is for the sender and one is a ground. The one hooked to the speedo is for the backlight, the other is the sender. Check for a good ground on the other & make sure all connections are tight. Does this plug into the shift control or is it wired directly to the Motor? May be it's time for a new Gauge if everything checks out. Would be nice if you could borrow one to check it out!

Re: rpm gauge trouble

you only mention 3 connections, with 2 hot. You should also have a send (alternator pulse) connection.

Re: rpm gauge trouble

4 posts total, 2 hot with ignition and lights on(I, L), 1 gnd and 1 signal pulse from alternator(S, not hot unless engine running). Looks to me that so far your readings (2 12v hots, 1 no hot with engine off( the S post) and good ground) are normal. I would check with another gauge if I had one to test, and if not, would check continuity of the Send(S) connection on the gauge all the way to the appropriate terminal block on the engine as necessary. If that is good ,I would check for pulse signal when the engine is running(careful) at the gauge and then the engine terminal block(real careful) if there is no reading at the gauge. I'd replace the gauge next if all is good to there. I bet your send wire is bad near the gauge and does not get the alt pulse to the gauge.
