Hello,
I have a 90 force that will not rev past 3000 in foreward but will rev out in reverse. Timing, linkage? what are your thoughts.
Thanks,
Ken

Howdy, Tika.

Linkage and/or engine trouble.

In reverse the engine has a much lighter load. Many outboards have a reverse lock to prevent WOT when in reverse.

With the heavier load in FWD your engine is running out of power before it gets to WOT.

Could be that a reverse throttle lock has slipped and is preventing WOT in FWD instead of reverse.

Could be that for some other reason the engine is not getting full throttle opening and ignition advance when in forward.

Finally, could be that the fuel system can't supply enough fuel for WOT at the heavier load of FWD. That could be fuel supply system or it could be a carb partially blocked.

Good luck. :)

What JB said.
And Welcome to iboats.com :)

And to make sure the linkage is giving you WOT in forward, with the motor NOT running, push the binicle full-forward (WOT). Now, remove the cowl, and insure that the butterflies (the plates inside the carb), are opening fully, and not just partially. If they are opening fully, your linkage is fine. Note that under normal conditions, the original settings rarely change with timing adavance and associated linkage on these (and most) outboards. They are set-n-forget.
So i would forget them unless you know for sure that they have been futzed-around with.
