I have a 20ft Bayliner with a 4.3 with 21 P prop. It will not go over 3500 RPM WOT. What might be the problem?

Re: RPM Problem

I don't know about the tune-up. Not since i have had the boat, which is about 2 months. It has a GM motor and the outdrive is an Alpha 1. As to the speed, it has never ran over that. I had only ran it a couple of times when i noticed the oil. The motor runs good and have never had any kind of problem with starting or anything like that. The shop that worked on it did just repairs to the outdrive and steering components. He put a new coil and oil cut-off switch. He said that everything else was ok.

Re: RPM Problem

Howdy,

Get a different (known) tach, a GPS and run the boat again. You need to determine accurate RPM and speed. Then determine which engine you have and find out the correct WOT RPM range for that engine.

You may not have any problem at all. (except indication error)

Re: RPM Problem

Maybe a 21p prop is a little much for this boat?

Also check on the back of your tach and make sure it is set to 6 cyls and not 8.
The rpms you mentioned sound like my 3.8 did, until I reset the tach to the right setting.

Re: RPM Problem

I have another post titled OIL IN BILGE. It in a nut shell says that I have had some oil in the bilge of my boat. There is a spot on the front of the motor between the head and the intake that gets wet. I don't know when or what comes out there. It doesn't do it on the hose. The oil level went down about a 1/4 qt.
