Beautiful day in the N.E..Took My 18ft wellcraft to the boat ramt to run it in water. I usually just use muffs at home. I read in a post to set the timing you need 5000rpms. Someone posted to back down a ramp put it in gear go to 5000 and set the timing. I put my 1988 150 blk max in gear and could only get to 2200rpm.{ I did not give it all cause I did not want the boat in the back of my pickup}.My question is what kind of rpms should i get on the motor when in gear 2/3 up?<br />Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: Rpm question

You got what you should have gotten about 2500 to 3000. If you carefully trim up your motor you can get a higher rpm, but be careful as you can overspeed it due to cavitaion. What I did was take an old prop and cut the blades down to about 1 inch off the hub and then only left about 1/3 of the remaining 1 inch of the blade nearest the motor. This has worked as a test prop for just what you are doing. I can put the motor all the way down, and as the prop turns it only gets minimal bite in the water but does place some pressure on the prop, allowing me to get 5500RPM. Its basiclly a test prop. Again just be careful with you throttle movements, slow is best as you can still overspeed your motor.
