Im working on a 1992-1994 force 40 outboard. . . serial number is unreadable. . . Im new to this outboard voodoo but I have got her starting like she is brand new and running pretty smoothly. Not bad for a free off of craigslist, unknown last time it ran, yatta yatta. and for under 100bucks with wheel and throttle, I'm winning. I have a shop manual i have found the original owners manual. I understand fine adjustments to the idle must be done on the water with the outboard attached to the boat, all my research points to the idle should be at 750rpms (or as i like to call them rip-ems) on the water in forward gear. However, Does anyone know what the not in gear, in a test tank, mounted on a outboard stand RPMS should be. . . ? Ball Park estimate?

750 RPM - must be in water - at same height level as when sitting on the boat.

You're absolute correct, it's a ballpark and an estimate. This is because different power ratings and different prop sizes makes a whole lot of difference between idle in gear in water and idle neutral. However, from experience I can recommend initially setting it (idle neutral) between 1000~1200 rpm. I always do the higher initial setting (just to make sure it doesn't die when placed in gear) and then tweak it from there.

Thanks for the speedy replys, she does tank idle at 1150-is. Now who wants to come to Kentucky and help mount this motor to the boat? All my "Friends" seems to be the first with their hands out in my direction but.... most of you already know how that goes. lol. . . I have beeeeer

I'd give you a hand but Kentucky is too far from Utah. I used a engine picker on mine and a couple of nylon straps, Easy!

It's easy to make a mounting template for the bolt holes.
Look on Google.
I just made one for mounting a 225 on my center console.
I use a cherry picker.
Or if you live close to a dealer they might loan you the template.

Just hanging it on the back? the motor might stick down too far?

Just make sure the cavitation plate is even with the bottom of the boat.
