Hi again good people,

Those who had rwad my other questions will know that I recently had my in laws over from th uk and while they were here my fther in law decided to do some respraying on my boat. I didnt know how to so i was grateful but there was no masking of my rub rail so I had to remove it and clean up all the overspray. It looks like it was glued in place previously but a lot of things on my boat look like they were bodged by the previous owner so its hard to know if he did anything correctly and what the correct method is, so thats my question. What is the correct way of putting it back on and making a good job of it.

I have put a video on you tube so you can see the current state of it. The link is here.. Boat rub rail question - YouTube

Many thanks

Paul

Re: Rub Rail repair. How do I do it?

Ayuh,... That is an odd joint,... Is there a channel in the rail's backside,..?? What's it's profile,..??

I'd think you'll need to sand all that area,...
I'd also think the old glue needs to come off...

Is the upper deck firmly glued to the lower hull,..??

I'll move this to the Resto forum for ya,... Lotsa help down there...

Re: Rub Rail repair. How do I do it?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Yes there is a channel in the rear of the rubrail and I will add a pic of its profile shortly. It does grip itself ever so slightly to the area it should. The two halves of the boat are riveted together by the looks of it and I will be sanding the area smooth so I can get good adhesion when I get some more time and removing all that old glue.

Thanks for shifting the post. Any other tips on how to get more help. I am new to boating and can use all the help I can get as I am doing it all on a budget. Not a lot of money for mistakes.

Hello Paterson ..

Is that putty/glue stuff still kinda soft ? .. or is it hard like silicone ..

I think if you clean the flange joint and then put some window tape sealant in place of whatever goo was there should be fine.

I know what rub rail your dealing with. Its kind of a clamp type rubber that you bang in with a rubber mallot/hammer/deadblow.

Sometimes because of a Memory issue with the rubber/plastic .. it might not Bite back on the flange.

I know it would be a pain .. but you might want to prefit the rubrail before you add any caulk just to make sure it has some bite to it.

Worst case you would have to clean/acetone every bond point .. then install it.

Hi. The remainder of the glue is more like silicon than putty. The rub rail is designed to grip on as you will hopefully see from the pics and I'm sure it will need flying back in place too. I guess what I need to know more than anything is what type of glue is the correct type. It had crossed my mind to bulk up the area that it is supposed to grip to before I install it so it had something more to grip to.

Ayuh,.... You could do that,...

I've never seen anything quite like that, But,...
I'd think yer gonna want a glue like 4200, maybe, 'n a pile of clamps, 'n duct tape to hold it while it cures...

Other's may have a better idea,...

If your going to rely on caulk to hold your rail on.. then make darned sure both surfaces are clean.

I agree with the 4200 as a bonding agent. If that does not work then you may have to start contemplating some kind of fastener system..
