I am new to this and I have a standard hub with alum prop on my boat. My friend has a similar boat but has a rubber hub with alum prop. (04 Tahoe 19' BR with 4.3 merc)

We are both new and have replaced props once already. His because he rides in inland Fla. rivers and chunked a blade on his rubber hub. I replaced because i beat my prop in a sand bar in ICW gulf coast Fla.

So what is the advantage and disadvantage of rubber hubs and is it more critical with SS vs Alum.

Re: Rubber Hub vs Std Hub

The rubber hub is designed to be sacrificial in the event of a solid 'hit'. The rubber may just give a little, or be spun depending on the severity of the impact. Easily replaced by any prop shop, and a whole lot cheaper than those shafts and gears in your lower unit!

I won't want a SS prop without the rubber hub...SS is not as forgiving as aluminum, and has tons more inertia when spinning.

Happy boating!
