rubbing noise under flywheel

I took my boat (94 Merc 115hp 4cyl 2stroke) in for a tuneup and they said there is a rubbing noise under the flywheel. I have heard this also but I think it goes away when it is put in gear. They said $100-$150 just to check it out so I am holding off for now. Any ideas on what this could be and how serious????

$60. for a puller and a little time ,look & listen save some money and get to know your engine. could be many things !
