Rude engine revs randomly

[Catch 'em all]

Got a 1986 Evinrude 40hp, elec start. When I got it a year ago, the first few times I ran it the engine revved up and slowed down arbiraily. Just started changing speeds on its own. It has since stopped doing that, actually hasn't done it since those first few trips out on the water. Is that anything I should be concerned about? What should I be looking out for?

add a can of Seafoam to your next fill up, along with the oil.

If it is running fine I would leave it alone. The symptoms point to crud in the carb - a rebuild may raise your comfort level.
