ok, i'm very "new" to the boating world and want to learn the "rules" of the water. i'm going to take a boater's safety course but haven't found one yet. is there a website that explains what all the different buay's (sp) mean, and all of the different sign's? i do most of my boating on the river and see all kinds of sign's, different colors, shapes and numbers and don't have a clue what they mean. any help would be appreciated. thanks

I don't know where you are from, but I know that Kansas has an online boaters safety class, I took it along with my daughter when she was 12. Anyway, you might see what your state offers, or you can look it up though Kansas's website if you have to. There might be something on this site too, but I haven't seen it. The online class we took was good and it went over the signs and markers really well. Good luck, and I am happy to hear that you are interested in expanding your knowedge.

Amazing that the least boat friendly state in the country without a single body of water worth getting wet in would have a boating safety course? Who is it taught by, cowboys? I moved to this godforsaken place for my career and while that progresses the day this place of Kansaw is in my wake, the sooner, the better, a glorious day. Bugs, dirt, cows and wind.

Yes, there are rules, purchase or check out from the library a book on boating such as Chapmans.

Buy a good map of the body of water that you fish, it should have a legend on it that will tell you what all the buoys are and what they mean.

You do realize that you're talking bad about someone's home that they love, don't you?

Kansas isn't that bad... have you ever been to Mississippi?

get in touch with the us power squadron or the uscg aux.
they have classes that you attend in person. which is likely a better way to learn than via the www. + you'll get to know other boaters from your area. they'll have experience to share with you..

i'll second the chapmans seamanship and boat handling book. very in depth read. everything you need to know about boating. almost.
