I have an 18' bass tracker w/ a 90hp merc. I have been using an older motorguide 45lb 12/24 for the past few years and that motor is beat to hell and on it's last leg so I just bought a new motor guide pro series 24v 75lb. I liked the old 12/24 because I fish in drastically different situations and the wide spectrum of power options came in handy. If I were fishing in heavy current (tail races), I could use 24v and mainain control and move around...but if i fished above the dam at night when there was no wind, I could put the motor on 12v and creep along in stealth mode,,,some times speed 1 on 24 was too fast when the water was dead calm. I fish the tailraces more times than not so the high power is needed so thats why i bought the new 24v motor guide. My question is can I install a toggel switch on the bow where in the top position I could run 24v and then in the bottom run 12V? it looks like to me that on my old 12/24, the toggle on the pedal just simply ran the motor to one battery in the 12V position then switched it over to both batteries in the 24v position. I guess the bottom line is, will it damage this new 24V motor to run it off of one 12V battery?...or is there something about the older 12/24's that allows it to safely run in 12 and/or 24?

In one word or less.... Yes.

Its designed to have 24 volts. Less will cause damage to it.

I would be very careful about doing that. Reason being that electronics can be damaged by undervoltage as well as over voltage. Why do you think locators and even stereo systems have a low voltage cutoff???? A 24 volt motor is not designed to be run at 12 volts. If it was it would have a 12/24 switch like your old motor.
