Hi, I have a wonderfull little 6hp evinrude longshaft 1992 vintage that is the perfect running trolling motor. I love it except for one thing. It's a pain to rinse after use. I can't use water muffs due to the way the water intake is positioned. It's a diaginal screened tube that is both above and below the cavitation plate. Is there a device that hooks to a garden hose for this. I have to use a barrel, which a big :confused:hastle. Thanks for any help.....Robert

Sadly, there's nothing sold commercially for that purpose. It's a little annoying, especially for folks who boat in saltwater. The freshwater folks just don't bother, unless they want to work on the engine.

I'm going to design something this winter for mine, since I can't use it for a few months up here. I think I have the design worked out, and it'll be really simple.

When I get it up and working, I'll post the plans here on iboats.com. Anyone will be able to duplicate it...no problem...with simple hand tools.

I suppose I should make them and sell them, but I just don't have the ambition for it. So...hang in there. Sometime this winter I'll get the plans up.

Robert - look around for an alternative to the barrel. Any large tub will work as long as it's deep enough to cover the intakes. I currently use a $8 large round tub, the kind with rope handles you see everywhere. It works great for both my Evinrude 15 hp short shaft and my Merc 9.8 long shaft. I've seen even better options - large rectangular storage tubs which are also pretty cheap. I think they'll work even better than the round one when I put the engine in gear for idle, etc. adjustment.

These tubs are much easier to handle than a large garbage can or barrel, and seem to work great with my wheeled outboard stand and/or sawhorses. If I was really ambitious, I'd drill a hole in the bottom and put a plug in it so it was easier to drain.

A friend of mine has an older 6 hp and he uses a square bucket ... the type used for household floor cleaning. the LU fits just right in it. Has the square shape to dip a sponge floor mop in it. You can buy them anywhere for a few $$.
