Running a cracked block

My friend has a 1986 3.0L chevy block which is cracked right below the exuast manifold and he runs the boat regularly. He put JB weld over the crack and it doesn't leak water. My question is, is it ok to run a block like this if the block is not leaking? I thought a block was pretty much junk if it is cracked. He thinks he can run it without replacing it for a long time. Is this true?? Anyone else ever run a motor with a cracked block?

Definately OK to run that way. If the crack is just in a wateer jacket and JB weld can seal it he is lucky. I had a 5 L that I cracked real bad all along the undersides of the V. I had it cast iron welded and ran it for 12 years before repowering with a bigger engine.

Ayuh,..........

It all depends on Where the crack Is,........

As long as there's No water getting into the Oil,...... It'll run Forever,......
You don't even Have to glue it closed if you have a large enough Bilge Pump......... :D
