running a motor without drive oil?

while I am in the process of trying to get the moisture out of my engine, will my outdrive be ok if it is low or out of oil? I have not checked it yet and don't plan to engage the prop while the motor is running. It is mercruiser 3.0 and an alpha one drive.
Also I read somewhere that I should have the water pump in the Alpha one changed every year, is this true?

Never run the drive without oil. Don't even let it set without oil in it.

The shafts, bearings, and gears are all turning at all times when the engine is running. Only the propshaft is disengaged.

The water pump used only in freshwater could be extended to more than a year depending on several factors.(type of water, silty/sandy, clear natural lake, running aground etc... )

Thankyou, before I do anything else to the motor I will make sure the outdrive has oil in it. Since all of that is turning, is that why my prop seems to try to spin while I am turning the motor over? It is in neutral, or do I have an adjustment or something to address also?

vip

the prop will spin some what in netural with the motor running (good reason to keep the kids and pets away)

with the motor OFF and in netural it should spin freely by hand in both directions

tommays
