Bam! no spark. fuel check!, Air check! spark? not really.

By not really, I mean boat fires when WOT in neutral, but just for a second.

Coil is now leaking oil.

A new coil is in order ( can I get a coil from Autozone?)

But I think the shift/throttle is the culpit here.

In reading some things here, I realized I was stalling when returning to neutral. I would give throttle in neutral, then ease it back to engage forward or reverse.

I am thinking something there got jarred, and now now allowing the shift inturrupt to function properly.

I didnt dig into it much, was on the bay with good 4 footers rolling.

Now at home, is there a way to disable the switch? I imagine disconnect a lead to the switch, as "in " on the microswitch is engine off position.

how far off am I?

What kind of motor and drive is it we're talking about?

Not sure what the throttle would have to do with no spark. If the coil was going bad you were probably stalling because of a weak spark, nothing to do with the throttle.

Yes you can get a coil from Autozone, but I would look for an apoxy filled coil, not oil filled, better for vibration resistance. They may or may not carry one.

Needs to be USCG approved, and oil filled/epoxy filled both have negligible difference in vibration resistance.

Do you have a resistor on the motor not sure what year you boat is but had a friend that had the same trouble when we we out. Found a burned resistor changed it out and all was good his was a older boat cannot remember the year but I think was in the mid eighties. It would start for a couple seconds and then shut off.

Looked through the manual didnt find a resistor.

1972 Slickcraft. mercruiser 888 and mercruiser1 drive.

I imagine the coil is shorting out due to the leaking of oil from it.

Will this condition still allow the engine to fire?

What reading should I be looking at the coil?

Nevermind, its leaking, it requires replacement.

Does it have a kill switch on it?

I just dewinterized my 2004 Stingray 200LX last week and I tried to start it. It would only light off for a half second. I pushed the throttle up and tried again. It would fire for only a half second. I played around with the throttle positions wondering why the engine would only fire for a quick half second  !

Then I looked on the floor and saw my kill switch lanyard just laying there. Plugged it into the kill switch and she fired right up like normal :redface: .

Are you useing a factory manual? Might want to check your ignition switch also do you have a piece by the coil that looks like it is made of ceramic?
Just reread what you wrote did you give the motor a tune up since having the problem if not could be part of the trouble....
