Here is the boat's information: 1984 OMC Stringer: 140HP, 3L, In-line 4.

I was out on the water for about 1/2 hour and everything was normal, then the engine shut down. No hiccups, no sputtering...it just died.

After making it back to the dock (45 minutes later), the boat started again...first try no problem.

I am thinking electrical...coil or distributor. What do you think? Thanks for the help.

Distributor's usually fail when hot. Maybe you just have a short. Use the manual and research it.

Bob

Re: Running great and then quit

My experience (similar symptoms) on a Volvo 3.0: The boat ran great, everything was fine, but wouldn't restart when i shut it down. The problem? The wire that goes from the distributor to the coil has a resistor in it - the contacts went bad so there was no connection between the pickup coil and the ignition coil - no spark. I almost went nuts looking for that problem - never thought it could be a WIRE!!! :D

My vote goes to the coil. If you do not have a resistor wire, the coil overheats.

Thanks for the feedback...I am going to replace the points, condenser and rotor along with the coil. Thanks again for your thoughts.

If you have 12 or more volts engine running) at the coil, you'll overheat a new one too.
