My '88 OMC 3.0L chevy I/O is running great EXCEPT after running for about 45 min continuously it will all of a sudden stall out, like it totally loses ignition.
It has a brand new:
- coil
- electronic shift assist module
- starter
- starter coil
- battery.

If I pull the bonnet and fiddle with the shift interupter it seems to be able to start up.
But this does not make sense in that I thought the shift interupter is only able to ground out the spark at a low RPM.

Thanks
Ned

Perhaps there is a short in the wiring to the shifter interupter.

Or the switch may be heat sensitive, once it heats up, it fails, it cools down it works.

Ken

If what you say about the Shift Interupter is true, then prove all else is OK by bypassing the SI and running it for an extended period of time. Shifting out of gears (Don't stop and go much) will be hard but you'll learn something about everything else.

nedder - it is just a dumb switch so it can kill the ignition regardless of how fast the engine is turning.

I had such a miserbale time with my interrupters I bypassed them permanently. In my case because my engines idle low (700 - 800) I have not had a problem shifting back and forth.

If I were you I would get some good electrical degreaser and clean the heck out of it along with the plate. Check the connections and make sure they are clean and tight. Then I'd adjust it and see what happens.

You would think with all the problems involving SIs there would be a better way developed for retrofit....

With I/O's, shouldn't idle be about 650?
Just curious.

Anywhere between 550 and 700 will work..

I have brand new 350s with Eddelbrock 4bbl performance carbs. Anything below 700 for me causes a stall at exactly the wrong time :D a hundred rmp is probably w/in the +/- range of the tachs.

Both engines still shifts easily for me w/o interrupters at 700 - 800 as read on my Teleflex tachs.
