Running hot?

New boat to me, 1997 7.4L 454 cid, running 170 when warm at idle, 180 approx,( Guage goes 170-225 so hard to be exact) when up on plane, 20-23 mph. Thermostat is 160, and old, approx 6yrs.

Returns to 170 when drop back speed. Might be faulty gage, will check with ir thermometer tomorrow.

Am I chasing ghosts ?

As AD suggested verify with a IR thermometer

Since it is a new to you boat do you have any receipts of when raw water pump impeller was last done ?

So start with an impeller job, a bellows and gimbal job, alignment, and all other maintenance that hasn't been done.

Thanks to all for your responses. The IR showed the gage was reading 10 degrees hot.
So I think I'm OK. Will repeat when under way on plane.
New impellor, gimbel and bellows done before launch.
