I am installing the following engine back in my boat tomorrow following a major DIY overhaul; Mercruiser, MCM 140, Serial number 5568367, Alpha One #OB656591.
I removed the engine as it was "seized", it turned out be a popped core plug trapped in the flywheel (report on other posts). Whilst out I decided to tear it down to fully check the block for cracks. No cracks found, fitted new core plug pressure tested the block, it was fine. Rebuilt the engine with new piston rings (deglazed cylinders), new bottom end bearings, (I re-used main bearings and thrust as they were in excellent condition and clearances as new), new crankshaft front seal, overhauled cylinder head and valves, new water pump, new harmonic balancer, new engine mounts, tune up kit (plugs, points, rotor and cond), and rebuilt it with all new gasket kits (all OEM parts), new lube and filters.
I will install the engine tomorrow and align it as per the book, I have the alignment tool.
I cannot find a "running in" procedure in the manual or on here, so my initial plan is as follows (boat on the trailer with water hose directly connected);
1). With sterndrive removed, turn engine over without firing with coil lead grounded until oil pressure is up and o.k,
2). Start engine, run up to temperature on idle speed, check for abnormal noise / leaks,
3). If all o.k install stern drive,
4). Run and adjust timing with timing lamp, set idle speed. Do a compression test.
If all o.k launch boat on the water and take for a river trial.
What I would like to know is when first out on the river what revs should I run it for initially and for how long?
How long should I run and at what revs until it is safe to go WOT?
Many thanks,
