Running issues

1983 Galstron, 3.0l Mercruiser.

Now that I've got the shifter squared away, I have a few other issues I need answers to.

1) I wired in the failsafe switch and no matter which way I wire it the engine will start and run only when this switch is in the OFF position.

2) Anytime I tried to go to full throttle or exceed 3200 rpms the engine would cut out. Later in the day the engine stalled due to a vapor lock. Is the cutting out due to a weak fuel pump or something else?

3) The engine had some pretty severe engine run on after turned off. What causes that?

4) I'm thinking of going to a Petronix electronic ignition conversion. Any suggestion for or against?

5) What kind of fuel pressure do these run? Thinking of running an electronic fuel pump to reduce the chance of a vapor lock again.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Re: Running issues

1 how did you wire it in?
2 fuel starvation, check all filters
3 incorrect timing, (too advanced) or engine temp too high, should be no more that 150 ish. too high a rpm setting in neutral
4 your choice
5 4-6 psi . the mechanical pump works fine.

Re: Running issues

Just is series where the old one was. If I disconnect it from either side the will not start no matter what. If I reverse the wiring, same thing happens. No start in the ON position and starts in the OFF position.

As far as the fuel filter/s, I can only find one on the bottom of the fuel pump, which I intend to change tonight.

The engine temp may have got to approx 160 when sitting at idle and dropped to approx 150 when at speed. I'm thinking your probably on the right track with the timing. Do the 3.0l have issues with carbon deposits?

The only reason I'm thinking of putting an elec. fuel pump on is to avoid the vapor lock situation again. No way to get away from alcohol based fuels anymore.

Re: Running issues

Is this just a toggle switch or rocker or lanyard? Got a pix? Only two terminals, right?

Re: Running issues

I've installed a Pertronix unit on my 165. Couldn't be more happier with the decision.

It's a rocker w/lanyard and two wire. I'm beginning to think the switch is defective.

Re: Running issues

True but then I still have the issue of the man over board feature not working correctly. Just me being nit picky.
