A couple questions about running my 1970's era outboard--(I forgot to run the gas out of it). Will running it out of water just long enough to run the carburetor dry hurt it? Is running one out if water harmful even if you keep it in neutral?

Yup. Put muffs or run in barrel. It will smoke the impeller

OP, are you aware though that many of those OMC carbs have a main jet/orifice access screw that lets you drain the fuel out of the carb? Usually you can screw it out until a few threads are left barely holding it in, letting fuel drain without losing/dropping it.

Some might be easier/harder than others to access.

If you have already run it out of water to drain the bowls, you need to change out the impeller.
