HI everyone,

Im having some problems with my evinrude outboad. This is my first boat and allot of this is new to me.

When attached to a water pipe and ran out of water all seems to be fine.

When i take it to the river it seems to be running a little rough and when you put it in to gear it stalls.

I took off the air filter and looked in to the carbs. (Shown in the photo) Looking at all three carbs the top one appears to be throwing out considerately more fuel near the brass pipe in the center than the other two.

Could this be my problem?

I did have it running once and managed to get a mile up river but it didnt seem to want to go as well as i though it should. then when i slowed down to head back the other way it it would only go to 2000rpm in full throttle.

I have cleaned the fuel filter and changed the spark plugs.

any help would be fantastic!

Thanks
Steve

I was thinking your carb was the same as mine, but it's not. That is an adjustable jet I believe, Im not a pro but Im sure a proper rebuilt with rebuild kits, a set of Champion plugs and a lync and sync would help either way.

You probaly just have a stuck needle and seat and a little trash in your jets.

Lucky.

One thing I recommend is searching these forums, you wouldnt beleive how many posts there are "70 Evinrude Stalling, 70 Evinrude wont idle, 70 Evinrude running rough." That is how I've been able to narrow down to a lot without even asking and wasting others times with the same questions as everyone else.

Just my advice :) Welcome to iBoats!

service manual http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1983&ID=148986

you also need to use this, for diagrams: http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

this is Stevet1984's carb, you can see the difference in the two.

there were 2 versions of this carb, adjustable low speed and fixed jet. Stevet1984's is the fixed jet version, using #25,26,27 not 30, 31 which is adjustable.

read this. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

also this causes problems in older motors.
Ethanol and fuel lines
replace all fuel line with Alcohol resistant lines. Ethanol deteriorates, the rubber lines, then they start to sluff off on the inside, going directly to the carbs. Settling to the bottom of the bowl. Contaminating the carbs high speed jets. clean a rebuild carbs, flushing fuel line before connecting to carbs

OK, now that, that is settled, lest get to the original question.

"I took off the air filter and looked in to the carbs. (Shown in the photo) Looking at all three carbs the top one appears to be throwing out considerately more fuel near the brass pipe in the center than the other two."

sounds as if, either the top carb is flooding, or the bottom 2 have restricted high speed jets.

yes, a carb cleaning, and rebuild kits are in your future.

also be sure you have a good pee stream, it could be running hot.

I think that i may have found the problem. We rebuilt the carbs and they all look fine. But we took apart the head and the head gasket has gone and water has been getting into the third cylinder,

Off to get parts tomrrow! hopefully this will sort it out
