I have a 1987 mercruise 165 the 3.7 liter 470 motor. It has been eating plugs. they get fouled out in like 3hrs of running. i have ried to adjust the carb with no sucess. so before i take it to get fixed i was wondering if u all have any ideas. plus my temp guage will not work i have checked the wiress going to it and replace the sensor and guage. so im at a loss.

Re: running problems

Hello;

Tell us what the plugs look like --- black sooty, insulator black and sooty fuel --- black and wet like oil ????

If fuel I would check the choke to make sure it fully opens and then check the float level ---- floats soak up fuel and sink then you are dumping fuel into the engine. Hook the boat up to the muffs and run it just off idle while looking into the carb --- if the venturi are dumping fuel --- float problems.

If you got the gauge wired right --- check for power at the gauge and then remove the wire on the gauge from the sending unit and ground that terminal on the gauge --- should read max. Maybe a loose or corroded connection at the helm head connector.

the plugs are black sooty. we checked the choke and it opening up. we did look inthe carb and no fuel was coming out of the venturie. i think it might be the coil.

Re: running problems
