I fixed the sticky float in the top carb of my Merc 55A and it runs... But its rough. If I rapidly press the electric choke, it runs much more smoothly. Once I quit with the choke, the idle speed goes down and it eventually stops. Should I tamper with the fuel/air ratio? Is there a proper way to do so? I have done nothing at all with the bottom carb, aside from a quick go-over with carb cleaner.
Also, I found that it sounds absolutely fantastic with a bit of throttle while rapidly opening/closing the choke.

Re: Running rough

Sounds like the fuel primer bulb may be bad, or you may have a leak in the fuel line by the primer bulb. Try putting new clamps on the fuel line or buy a new primer bulb.

Re: Running rough

I must be a few fries short of a happy meal. I just went and looked at the fuel line. Theres only one hose clamp and its on the quick disconnect at the tank. The primer bulb and the motor connector have no hose clamps. Even better is that the hose is only pushed partway onto the bulb's barb fitting.
I'll pick up some hose clamps today.

Re: Running rough

New primer bulb and fresh hose clamps.
Before I had this boat, it had sat for two years untouched. Someone suggested that maybe I should just run the motor. If I stop rapidly opening/closing the choke, it will keep running well for about six or seven seconds. Then it slows down and putters to a stop. Like its running out of gas. But the primer bulb is still full, as is the tank.

Re: Running rough

I would rebuild the fuel pump and THOROUGHLY go over the carbs. You could be setting this motor up for an early grave if you dont.Restricted fuel=restricted oil/lubrication.
