Running Temperature Question

Did my first sea trial with the family yesterday - We went about 1/2 a tank :D

Anyway, when we first started out I noticed that my temp went to 172ish and held. I went to the Marina and parked, re-checked the oil and gear lube and all was good. The impeller is good, no leaks through bellows, etc. So off we went for a few hours and it held at 172.

I've searched the forum and a few of you say thats too hot - if it is, what else should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Ollie

Re: Running Temperature Question

172? isn't overheating, unless it didn't use to run that hot. The thermostat is 160?, which means it doesn't start opening until 160.
Normally sitting at idle, they only get to about 160 and stay there. Then move up to 170 when under load.
You say the impeller is good, how old is it? Did you actually look at it? Was the vanes curled and wouldn't straighten out?

Re: Running Temperature Question

You might have to let people know if it's cooled by lake water or a closed cooling system, Raw water or Fresh Water.
It might make a difference.
oops, I see Don beat me.

Re: Running Temperature Question

It's a fresh water system. I originally thought it was closed (before I got the boat in my hands).
My dad replaced the impeller last year - however he has only gone out a few times - maybe 10 hours on the motor. I pulled it and checked it - looks new.

I think my biggest concern is the knocking (see other thread) - I'm not looking forward to pulling a 190lb Bravo 3 out.
