Just getting the 90' doral ready, and an issue I seen earlier in the year still exists...when started and left idle, temperature rises to about 200 and will quickly backs off if I give it some throttle, sometimes backs off on its own without giving it throttle. My first thought was impeller not pumping enough volume, but I had a a broken impeller on my old OMC and it was able to keep cool on the garden hose due to the tap water pressure, but would overheat on the lake. I'm guessing overheating @ idle on the garden-hose might be something other than the impeller

First I'm going to borrow an IR temperature gun to rule out a faulty gauge.
Then thermos stat

Ive read about the spring+ball in the cooling lines causing some issues, what should I look for there?

So , pull the drive and now run it on the hose ,helps isolate the issue. impeller is good for 2 years, then change it.

What engine do you have? Serial numbers work great

My first thought was to impeller as well...If its been more than a couple years, it is the first place I would check.
