End of last season heard a whine from the outdrive, so I pulled it off so I could check bellows, gimbal bearing, u-joints, etc. I also put a new alternator as the old one went kaput. Anyway, after I replace bellows, gimbal bearing, etc and put the drive back on I wanted to run the motor and see if the whine I heard was in fact the gimbal bearing that I suspected. It is ok to run the motor for a bit when the drive is off?

Yes, but you still must supply water to the engine through the inlet on the bell housing....
Try an old style hose nozzle & a bungee to hold it in place....
You can run it all day long like that.....;)
