Runs but stops

My 1978 20 hp Merc runs but when going to idle it stops abruptly making a clicking rachteting sound. Then it is very hard to get started. I have to prime until it leaks out the carb area and even then at times it does not run. When it does start it does not reach full RPM (flooding?) I had to paddle in from Georgian Bay the other day.... and missed a great bass.... SO does anyone have any suggestions?

Having a kicker as a backup is the best reason for getting one in my opinion. If you are in the bay or one of its tributaries you will want to get the max hp for the mount it will be on to accommodate for tide changes. Try to find the same brand as the main engine on your boat. Most of the time you can just move the fuel line from one to the other when you want to use the kicker, unless one is VRO and the other one premix. So where will you be boating?

Sorry for the last reply. Rebuild the carb. It sounds like the needle valve on the float is sticking
