Runs on choke only

I recently purchased a Merc 4.5hp. It had been sitting in storage for 1 year, without being started. It starts first pull of cord, on choke and idles and runs ok. As soon as I turn the choke off it stalls. What could be wrong?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

Kev<br />Welcome to iboats. It sounds like the carb has gummed up from sitting around with fuel left in it. You can try fresh fuel and adjust the air pilot screw and you may be able to get it running better, but most members here will advise a complete carb clean to remove the gum.<br />This means removal, dissassembly and install a new carb kit. Drop the leg and replace the impeller before too long as it may be dry and brittle.
