I got a 1994 Ford Bronco. Love the truck, the 351w would pull a house if it had wheels, but.....

As with all Bronco's the tailgate is rusting off and the rust is now staining the chrome bumper and the license plate. Anyone got some magic to clean this up. Elbow grease, soap and water and high pressure have yeilded a greasy elbow with suds on it.

Thanks, Doug

Go to junk yard and find another tail gate, maybe.

i once used a jug of chemicals that was supposed to convert rust to zinc oxide(or something other than rust, with zinc incl)... it appeared to work. it was inside the body panels where the convertible top stowed. but i don't have the car any longer, and don't have body shop expertise to know how good it really is. just a thought.

SOS pads will remove the rust stains on your bumper but will dull the chrome a little. But if the tailgate is rusted anyway ,what the heck. If you want to keep the stains away you can clear coat the bumper after you clean it.

Get some stuff called "RustNot"
It does just what Ebb described.
It chemically stops the rust process and it converts it into a useable surface.
You can find this stuff in most automotive paint stores.

I used it on my Mustang's top before I put on the new vinyl. Works great.

H.

Unfortunatly, the tailgate will need to be replaced.

Either a aftermarket one, or one from a junkyard.

I personally, would not use one from a junkyard because you will have the same problem a few years down the road, as you are buying one that may be close to the same condition as yours.

The cause of the rust is that the seals around the window don't work that well, so rain gets past.

The water then sits in the bottom of the tailgate, causing it to rust.

If you opt for a new tailgate, one modification that will extend the life of it, is to drill some drain holes in the bottom of the tailgate.

You can also have the inside of the tailgate undercoated, to further protect against rusting out.

As far as getting the rust stains off of the bumper, just use rubbing compound, by hand or machine, on it until the stain is gone.

I know these repairs sound expensive, but this is the only way to fix and prevent rust on those darn tailgates.
