I'm still working on this 1974 Evenrude 40 hp Norseman # 40454S, It seems the shaft won't come out with the lower unit. I noticed the impeller was new, I also noticed a slot cut or filed into the impeller housing. I believe the previous owner couldn;t remove the shaft either. So he lined the cut out and impeller keyway up and attemped to slide the L/U up while turning the flywheel. He must have knoced the key loose, I found it inside the housing with damage to the housing top. I have had the motor upside down for days spraying PB Blaster on the shaft everyday and hitting the shaft with a nylon hammer No Luck. Is there a pin or locking device on this motor? all the other OMC motors I've worked on before slide off with the driveshaft in the L/U. Thanks Mars

No, it is suppose to come out of the crank easily. Your PB blaster approach is a good one. If the lower unit as off already since the key was out, you can possibly clamp a couple of big vice grips on the drive shaft and wedge or jack it out.

Ya, I tried that with no luck at all and I really wacked at it.I think I need to get at the junction where they meet and add the heat. Should I access it through the crank cover?

mars i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i had the same problem with my 150...the crank is shot....it will eventually come apart but the splines in the crank will be coroded and will fall apart as soon as you put it together and put it under load. try hardwood wedges to seperate it. ...or you can chain the powerhead to a secure anchor and use a come along to pull the lower unit.

good luck

If the g/c is off of it with just the d/s sticking out you may want to remove the p/h so you have better access to the d/s.

Pull the powerhead and use an air hammer on the drive shaft, close to the crank. The vibration will often knock them loose.

They had a good design there, then had to change it. The o-ring that is supposed to keep the water out of the splines is relocated in the crank and gets knocked out of place with disasterous results. You may or may not still have a crankshaft. If you do, you need to clean the rust out and make sure that o-ring is there. That also says pull the powerhead.

Oddly eneough, I've never had one rusted together in all my years of working on these things. I know one thing, this issue would be tough on the lower unit too.

Yep, I think a main cause of that, is if someone leaves the o-ring out. The o-ring pretty much helps keep the drive shaft centerend in the crank and it helps retain oil up inside, so the rust doesn't set in. That is my understanding anyway. From what I was told about the Norseman, the o-ring was installed instide the crank, versus the top of the drive shaft, which made it really tough to tell if it was still intact, when the driveshaft was stabbed, along with the lower unit. Very stupid design change. The original idea of puting the o-ring on the drive shaft was so much better.
