I searched a few threads and am surprised I seem to be the only one with this problem. Any easy ways to remove old risers and exhaust manifolds for cleaning? This is an Mercruiser 898 198 HP serial#5403337

Most 'rusty' manifolds and elbows get 'trash-canned'.... Not recommended to clean them out. Once they hit about 10 years old (for manifolds) or 5 years (elbows), it's considered their life expectancy...

I think there is only the hose clamp, 4 nuts (9/16") on the elbow to the manifold, and 4 nuts (9/16") from the manifold to the engine.

I should have been more specific in my post. The bolts and nuts are not the problem it's separating the cast iron at the gaskets. I've been able to get both risers off by driving a putty knife between the seams. The manifold actually came off pretty easily once the bolts were out. It's the manifold endcaps that are a bit more difficult. It would be nice if I could soak them in something that might loosen these end cap gaskets.

I use a very sharp wood chisel (sorry Don), and that effectively cuts the gasket through.
