So I pulled my outdrive to replace the gimbal bearing and after putting it all together I hooked ear muffs and fired it up in driveway. No more gimbal bearing noise at idle. I then decided since I had the shift cable out to replace bellows I would try putting it in gear (which I have never done out of water with ear muffs only) In both forward and reverse gear I get a rhythmic click/ clunk about every 1-2 seconds. Is this maybe the 1 way ratchet effect of the outdrive when you turn the prop the opposite way while in gear because therre is no water to resist the prop? I can take a video if it helps.

Can I assume since it does not do it at all in neutral and makes exact same noise in forward or reverse that the noise in not the U- joints or the 90 degree ring & pinion gear? When I had the outdrive unit off the U- joints seemed ok. It is a pretty solid clunk as it transfers it through the transom like a light hammer tap on it. You can feel it.
I also found this thread about clunking with ear muffs on. Note post #2 from Bt Doctur specifically about running in gear on trailer with a SS prop.

fixed. After reading that other post and a few more I decided to remove my prop and try it with prop off. When I went to remove prop I noticed the locing tab was flopping indicating the nut was not tight. I remvoed prop, ran ti no clunking. I put prop back on, tightened well, no noise. It was loose prop mount.
