S/N# data plate

hi all, call me female but i have a mercury mariner thunderbolt ignition 402 series outboard? to determine s/n# and what exactly i have, how do you take the cover off top of engine? does it just pop off or is it latched? i cant find an IPB or illustration. cant order a manual if i cant find the data plate, thanks, jadamc

Serial is on a label on the bracket - not under the cover.<br /><br />You do not have a Mercury Mariner 402. It is either Merc or Mariner although in practise the are the same under the skin. <br /><br />If my notes are correct, the year range for that motor is 1972-1978.<br /><br />You need to know only '402' or 40 hp to find a manual here or, if you're into the manufacturer workshop mech. level, get a OEM service manual from ie. www.maxrules.com
