I am in online sales and deal with a variety of Law Enforcement. Long story short one I just got off the phone with a Michigan deputy who told me this story. It is very sad. He said that the guy had rented a pontoon for the day and was out with his wife and kids. It was a windy day and the guy did not have on a life jacket. It is unclear but from my understanding the guy was trying to push/pull the boat. He told his wife that he was very tired right before going under and never coming back up. Being young and a doctor I can only assume that the guy was in good shape. Just goes to show how important it is to not only have life jackets but use them. This is the 4th drowning story I have heard in the past year or two. Of the 4 victims none had on life jackets.

ELBA TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Divers on Tuesday afternoon recovered the body of a Lapeer doctor who drowned in Lake Nepessing on Sunday.

A three-day search ended about 2 p.m. Tuesday when divers found Antoun Aftimos, 43, near the center of the lake.

Aftimos was swimming with his family about 1 p.m. Sunday when he apparently became fatigued and slipped under the water, said Lapeer County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Nesbit.

A family member dove in after him but couldn't find him, said Nesbit.

Aftimos had a private medical practice in Lapeer, said Nesbit.

Divers from Sanilac, Oakland and Saginaw counties assisted with the search along with crews from Oxford, Elba, Lapeer and Mid-Michigan Search and Rescue.

How are you supposed to go swimming with a life jacket on?

We do it all the time:) and we wear ours, after my son was too proud to say he wasn't good, I saw the look on his face and knew something wasn't right, I asked him if he needed help and he nodded, from now on we wear our PFD's for swimming and stay in the water for hours, With our pfd ski jackets you can swim and have a great time with free movement. Sorry to hear about another one.

I dont always wear one but I throw one in with me so when I am tired I can grab it and at least sit on it. it is amazing how tired you can get in the water.

He said "swimming", not "scuba diving".. One swims on top of the water. One scuba dives under the water, which is difficult with a PFD. Of course your technique may be different.:D

Scuba is deep water, I swim in the shallow end.
Why would anyone decide to go swimming in 90 feet of deep cold water?

Well, that's my favorite type of place to scuba dive... but I've only seen people swimming there who had something to prove, or wanted to show off.

Re: Sad Story

I swim to workout 4 days a week. When I do this I'm never deep enough that I wouldn't be able to touch.

When I'm out swimming with my friends, on weekends and stuff, we usually are "swimming" with a drink in our hands, as to relax. Naturally we have some kind of flotation holding us up to do this :)

Same here. We usually anchor in 8' or so. We ALWAYS wear a PFD there. If we are in 3-4' we don't, but that's not swimming, that's walking. :D
