I have a nagging question regarding some of the components on my Mercruiser 7.4L (1991 vintage). (Boat = Formula 242SS)
Here is a little background . . .
The Previous Owner had the boat professionally maintained at a reputable marina. 13 years of ownership
I have owned the boat for 7 years and do my own maintennce.
When I got the boat:
Starter looked to be a replacement as it was not painted. It had markings of "GM12563829 9000860 U28SE00A" nothing else. I am not sure if it is a 'marine' component, but I would hope that the P.O.'s marina would be using the right parts for the engine.
I subsequently replaced the starter a couple years after owning the boat and the new stater has the sticker that says SAE Marine J1171", which is a good thing.
The alternator that came with the boat appeared to be original equipment and it has "SAE Marine J1171" on its ID label. It is a "Mando" style alternator.
I subsequently bought a new aftermarket alternator Made by "Arrowhead Electrical Products" from "DB Electrical" The product number is "AMN0002" which is advertised and sold as a replacement "Mando" Marine Alternator for various engines. I have also found the same product number (AMN0002) advertised as an industrial alternator for Bobcat equipment. The alternator did not have any product labels that I recall and it did not say "SAE Marine J1171" on it that I could see. Most likely a product of China . . .
Anyway FYI here is a link to the product: http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-5799-...o-marine-mando-alternator-293-18-amn0002.aspx
I have been using it for about 4 years now.
So, I am wondering about these aftermarket parts that do not have the "SAE Marine J1171" label and if they are truly marine components. Is there any way to tell for sure, just by looking at the component (i.e. alternator or starter)???
I could possibly put the original alternator back on the engine, as it still is in working condition, it is just old. That way I would have both starter and alternator that say "SAE Marine J1171" on them.
TIA for your insights and comments on "SAE Marine J1171" and so-called aftermarket 'Marine' parts.
