As noted in http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...nson-lower-unit-removal?p=9361152#post9361152, my driveshaft was frozen in the powerhead. The model is an Evinrudde 4 that does not require any disconnection of the shift rod.
I forced the bottom unit apart from the powerhead, and the shaft pulled out of the waterpump - not a problem, as I had a replacement water pump kit ready. I Googled "stuck driveshaft", and the general consensus was to use a slide hammer and Pblaster. I soaked with Pblaster for about a week and improvised a slide hammer, but the shaft broke at the polished water pump seal seat.
I should NEVER have used a slide hammer!
I set up a heavy plate that bore on the crankshaft, and a second heavy plate holding two grade8 bolts. I then clamped the shaft using two 3/8 cable clamps and my 4" bench vice, and was able to jack the shaft out, under control, with no outside cracked castings of other damage.
