I an looking at buying a 21' -24' boat (dry weight 3500 - 4500lbs). I need a boat hoist for the boat so I was looking for a lift of min. 5000 lbs. My question is

1) Are any lifts better than others?

2) Seemslike once the boat is hoisted out of the water and left for a few weeks the cable could snap and?
Are there safety pins or ? that you put in place after the boat is hoisted up the eliminate this issue?

thanks in advance

Never seen a shore station with a safety. When the lift is all the way up, the strain on the cables is the least. If they are going to break then it'll typically happen before you are passing the 45 degree mark with the lift. When the cable does break, it'll scare the crap out of you ;) We just did a cable replacement on my FIL's shore station after a failure.

One other note, if your boat is near 4500lbs then go with a min 6K lift. Cranking the boat up on a near capacity lift is difficult.

There are boathouses with hoists installed at the ceiling holding up boats by steel cables and straps.
There are cantilever style lifts on the bottom of the lake.
There are float style lifts.

What style lift are you considering? Have you Googled "boat lifts" ?

Had a 27'er years back and while the cable did not break the lift eye did at a point below the deck that was not visible. Also if your estimate is based on some manufacturer's brochure you may find that the actual weight is closer to 6,000 lbs. What is under the hull when out of the water?? - - Can you put heavy shoring under it??
