1982 Sea Ray 26', 260 hp,

On Monday, the wife and I were going cruising for our maiden trip. The boat had been run up with the mechanic and I on Saturday and ran perfectly - new plugs, points, condenser, plug wires, new impellers, polished, new bottom paint after sanding. This boat looked sweet.

Fueled up at 3.25 per gallon and waited for the wife. 20 minutres late, and she got onboard. I started the blower motor and ran it for abty 5 minutes while she organized herself. Turned the ignition switch and it sounded as though a 155 howitzer had gone off. Turned around, wife had been ejected from the boat with the explosion that blew off hatch covers, flames, black smoke. My fire extinguisher was rapidly gone and a commercial put out the fire quickly. Wife had broken ankle in two places, bruided in several places, had emergency surgery that night.
Post Mortem - when the marina owner and mechanic checked the boat, the blower switch was on but the fuse blown- no surprise since wiring and battery were toast on starbord side. No duct work for the blower was left and the motor would spin but the fan not. Appears as though the noise that I thought was the fan working was the motor running without the fan working.
Suggestions: 1. Several times a year check the blower motor AND fan to see they are working.
2. If more than 5-6 years old, replace blower and motor and ductwork.
Ironically, boat suffered less damage than wife, needs wsiring on the starboard side, new batter and the hull refastened in 10 or 12 places. Only one crack in fibreglass and it is on the upper transom, easily repaired

One should ALWAYS open the eng. compartment to SMELL and LOOK before starting and after fueling.
So the big question is where did the fuel come from?

Might be a good idea to find out where the fuel leak is also.

Check the blower motor every time before you start up. I mean I turn the blower on and go back and feel the air coming out of blower then smell for gas every time before I start up.

Also make sure your blower motor is pulling air in from a hose in the lowest part of the bilge. Input air should be above the carburetor.

John- sorry to hear about the misfortune, but glad eveyone is alright and repairs seem to be minimal. Like Bt Dr said, always open hatches before starting, only take a few seconds to open most, but gives you a chance to let your eyes & nose do a "pre flight" inspection.

Wow. Glad you're both going to be ok. I've seen boats burn down to the water line before...not a pretty sight.
I don't think I would ever get my wife back in a boat again if that happened to her!

John....glad your still around to be able to tell us about it. While the boat is being repaired why not think about having a fume detector installed as well, while it and the blower is still no replacement for the visual/nasal inspections the others have suggested every little bit helps to keep you and yours safe...good luck!

Sorry to hear about the accident.

I always stuff my face right in the blower's output vent and give a good long sniff before firing it up. There's never any doubt that way.

Jon, Very glad that you wife is going to be okay. As far as the boat... find out where the leak was.
wow how scary was that!
When everybody tells you to open the cover and smell they are really telling you and EVERYBODY else that reads this as well as reminding themselves to do just that.
While I like to think I am a very safe boater, I may have been guilty a few times at the ramp of starting her up before I checked. Your story is a lesson to all, especially me, not to take saftey for granted. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for sharing your story
Jim
