Ever heard of the above outboards? Are these China build clones of some Japanese motors? This (SAIL) name seems to be popping up more & more as a cheap alternative to some high priced outboards at a fraction of the cost. Anyone own one and can comment?

They are Chinese clones of older (out of production) Yamaha engines: well at least the smaller 2-strokes. From the lack of reaction from Yamaha I suspect they're being produced under license. Haven't heard from a buyer yet.

I suppose they'd be illegal to sell in the US due to the EPA regulations.

I know certain states like CA have discontinued the sale of 2 strokes all together best I know starting in 2006. Where can I find the details on EPA regulations on small outboards like 2 – 5 HP 2 strokes, what states, what years, when implemented so on and so on ….. I’m in the process of buying a bunch of 2006 two stroke 3.5 HP motors for resale, need to know the rules, thanks.

I don't live in your country so I don't really bother to try to follow your laws, especially since they vary so much. But as I understand it, the 2006 standard is EPA alone, and affects only outboards manufactured after 2005. That is to say, the sale of used outboards is completely unaffected.

2-strokes are not explicitly banned, but carbed 2-strokes are implicitly banned since no manufacturer has been willing to produce one that will meet the emissions standard. DFI 2-strokes will obviously pass no problem.

As for what goes on in California, as I understand it the banning of sale of non-compliant engines applies to outboards made after 2001. But I'm no expert on Californian laws. Not by a long shot! :D

You can get them in Canada - there's a place on the West coast dealing them . I saw a dinghy for sale locally that has one on it in the picture, but the motor isn't included... - I'm going to email the guy about the motor and see what he has to say...be back...

The guy answered - said he only used his Sail 15 a few times, but it worked flawlessly and was identical to his Yamaha.

They are not legal for the U.S. They cannot be shipped into the U.S. and cannot be operated here. IE Possession alone results in you being fined, both the seller and buyer are subject to a huge fine when they are caught.

Just to clarify...CA has instituted strict emissions regulations that don't specifically target 2 strokes- just overall emissions. The newest 2- strokes use direct injection instead of carburetors and usually meet the requirements. New 2-strokes must meet current regulations to be sold in CA. Old 2 strokes may be resold and used. Certain waterways (about 11 lakes) have restrictions against carbureted 2 strokes due to the noise/emissions. As long as they were legal to purchase they are legal to use in all saltwater and almost all bodies of water in CA. With the new technology they actually beat some 4-strokes in terms of emissions, noise and even oil consumption! Tohatsu/Nissan (TLDI) and Evinrude (E-tec) seem to be ahead of the pack in this technology. I know a few people with each of those motors and the oil consumption is surprisingly low, noise is relatively low, much better fuel economy than carb'd 2 strokes, and they meet future CARB emisision restrictions.

Re: SAIL - SHARK - GULL China Outboards ?????

what model do you have?
I would get a 40 if they had a short shaft - all they have is long shaft in the 40 HP, which is weird... you would think they'd be after the inflatable market
