Does your state have sales tax on gasoline, after the regular Federal,State and local taxes are added? Us poor fools who live here in Calipornia are blessed with 8.25% sales tax on motor fuel, both gasoline and diesel,in our county. This includes BOAT FUEL.The % varies from county to county, but the minium sales tax here is 8%. So for each gallon of fuel we buy, we get stuck with another 16 cents+. at the $2.00+ per gallon price. It is added into the pump price to make sure it gets paid. Does anyone else have sales tax on "Motion Lotion" in their state?

I think I have always paid whatever the local sales tax, anywhere I have purchased gasoline.

I know Colorado and Indiana do.

The extra mystery .25% you pay, may be added to clean up road kill, or something equally as important :)

And I have beach-front property on Mars I can sell you... :)

H.

22.6 Cents/Gallon for the Federal and State excice tax,

plus the 8.5% NY Sate (Suffolk Cty.) Sales Tax,

plus 18.4 cents/gallon Federal gasoline tax!

That's 41 cents / gallon total Federal and State excice and Federal gasoline tax all added together, then you have to add the State sales tax of 8.5% to the total amount of gas you purchase.

So if you were to purchase 10 gallons worth of gas at $1.50/gallon, it would cost you $15.

That means you would pay:

$2.26 for the Federal and State excice tax.
$1.84 for the Federal gasoline tax.
$1.76 for the State Sales tax.

So for that 10 gallons of gas, you will pay $5.86 in taxes.

How crazy is that?

If the federal and state government didn't hide the taxes they take, and calculated and printed it at the register so everyone saw it every time they filled up, the taxes would have gone down along time ago. Out of site, out of mind.

Re: Sales tax on gas in your state?

The thing is they tax you a percentage and not by the gallon. So, when gas prices go up that chunk increases. Most states pay about 40% state and fed gas tax. This means that when gas was a buck a gallon $.40 went to the Government. When it was $1.50 that is $.60 a gallon. Now that in some states it is $2.00 the tax is $.80 a gallon. Everyone has to buy gas for the most part. When prices go up we still buy. If there was a flat tax then we would always pay $.40 tax per gallon or so making the gas now only $1.60 a gallon. Hey, at least we get an income tax break, Right???

Re: Sales tax on gas in your state?

Everybody's griping about gas taxes, like they are something new.

There were hefty federal and state taxes on gas, when I was a pump jockey in 1973.

Only then, at least in Indiana, sales tax was not included in the price, so I'd run in 96 cents for a dollar's worth (a little over 2 gallons).

Some old man complained that it was illegal to charge " a tax on a tax" (like there was a lot I could\would do about it :D ) but he may have been right, since technically sales tax was being charged on an amount, in which a large portion was fed/State tax (18 cents I think).

Taxes are everywhere. I just paid $57 federal excise tax on an $260 airline ticket.

Good to know all that money is going to good use

No "sales" tax but the price per gallon reflects 23.256 cents per gallon (or something close after the decimal) state and federal taxes.

When is the last time you priced out the cost of building a new highway? Or repair of an old highway? Or the cost of other transportation issues, such as rapid transit?

In the scheme of things, our fuel taxes are some of the lowest in the developed world. I prefer roads to drive on that don't shake all my fillings out, and I suppose somehow they need to be paid for.

Re: Sales tax on gas in your state?

All well and good plywoody, but we use to live in Washing State, as my father was a test pilot for Boeing many years ago. That was when highway speeds were 45 mph, but later on we left and went back home to Colorado,(sigh).
Then my parents drug me to Calipornia, where I have been ever since. but not by my choice.
The sales tax money in Calipornia doesn't go to fix our roads. It goes to the damn illegal aliens our Socialist Governor gives "Scholorships" to, for our state universities and other "entiletements." Not just hundreds of thousands dollars, but that number is in scholorships awarded. Guess who pays for it...DUH.
The illegal aliens, who work cash jobs, get minnium of $10.00 an hour, tax free and get 100% free medical care. Many of them make more than I get in my retirement pension check, after sepnding nearly 30 years in law enfocement, protecting their illegal asses. It costs me $795.65 per month just for health insurance, which comes right off the top of my monthly check. That is before taxes and is for a family of three. You wonder why I b***h about 8.25% sales tax on gasoline, not to mention the other charges leved on us down here? Some of our bridge tolls are going up to $5.00 for a one way passage, the other way is free. These bridges have been paid off for 30 years or more, but the pukes that run this state have to keep their leach like voters happy.
You probably aren't aware we now have to pay a 3.33% state tax on the sales of our homes, on top of the other fees, again right off the top. Do you have that in Washington?. I doubt it. So in other words, if you sell your home and if you go thru a realtor, you not only have to kiss the 6% realtor fee goodbye, you may have to tack on another additional 3.33% percent for nothing, again right off the top, so some political idiot can buy more votes.
The state is now siphoning local money directly out of the cities, so they can keep their adjendas intact.
People from differnt states I talk to ask how come Calipornia is $35,000,000,000, yes, 35 BILLION, dollars in debt and climbing. That is more than all the other 49 states combined!
You wonder why our roads are in S**T for shape???
I hope this sheds a little light on what only scratches the surface. We don't need more taxes, it's not their money, it's OURS. With 15 million+ drivers in out state, you can see why the 8% plus sales tax doesn't go toward road repair and new roads, like it should, it's just another windfall for buying votes.
Come on down and spend some money, we can use it.
...Respectfully submitted...Bob in Calif...
P.S.: Have a nice day. :)
