I recently picked up an HDS 7 that came with a transom mount 83/200KHZ transducer. From what I have read a 50/200KHZ is best for salt water use.

I have a late 1970's 17ft hourston glasscraft with a 60hp 4 stroke yamahe outboard, and 8hp yamaha kicker.

I am wondering what some of my different transducer options are and the pros and cons of each. I first wanted to mount a true through hull transducer but decided against it for two reasons. 1) High Price 2) I don't plan on keeping this boat forever and once installed it would be too much work to remove and repair the hole left behind.

So I am left with transom mount and shoot through hull as options. I do think I could install a shoot through hull in my bilge I can't imagine there being anything besides glass between the bilge and the water but I don't know for sure.

What I would like to get out of it is a bottom reading at speed (up to 28MPH), clear sonar definition including fish arches and a clear shot of the bottom, and it would be nice to see thermoclines and be able to determine if I am over rock, sand, or mud etc.
