Hi folks, trying my first impeller change. Its the much dissed merc 470. Twins no less. Built an awesome outdrive jack and got all the bolts off except the allen bolt under the zinc. I used a torch. The bolt stripped. I hammered in an 8 mil. That stripped. All while spraying wd on it. Not asking for any info, just wanted to say saltwater blows. This thing welded itself together. Will be starting to drill out the bolt shortly. The hour meter says 300hrs on both these engines so i might get lucky. 1983 thats a little odd.

A propane torch with a small tip focused directly on the center of the zinc from the bottom. It has a lower melting temp than the alum. It will melt off the center the nut inside of it.

WD-40!? WEAK. You might be beyond this point, but next time.....

PB BLASTER - If you have nuts 'n' bolts 'round salt water... you need something like this. Never failed me. Busted loose a trailer hitch-ball nut that was dunked in salt water for 10 years and which had not been removed once from the receiver in all that time.

salt water is great.
makes me lots of coins, keeps my heli-coiling skills honed and I get to play with the oxy/acetlyne almost daily :).
especially on low hour 10 yr old rigs.
cause they get neglected.

When you go to put it all together, dab some perfect seal on all the threads and the next time she'll come apart like buttah.
