I've been wintering in FL, and summers in WI (home state). Lots of "Saltwater Mercs in FL. What's the difference? Just curious.

Everything that comes in contact with salt water will corrode at a very fast rate. I have a running 1968 9.5 Rude that was used in fresh water that looks brand new. A salt water motor probably wouldn't last past 15 years without alot of care

Paul, Generally a "Saltwater Merc" will have more parts made from stainless steel, vs carbon steel. This would make for a more durable motor, in saltwater. The exact differences probably vary by year.

no matter which version you have - flush, wash, maintain your anodes, and use dry storage. Stainless and aluminum become bitter enemies in saltwater. Stainless always wins and the aluminum is left with deep pits. In the case of SS bolts and shafts going into aluminum blocks and housings the bolts will become seized 10x worse than any rust. Anodes are vital. Don't ever neglect your anodes in saltwater. If you neglect your anodes in saltwater then SS becomes a curse as it accelerates galvanic corrosion of aluminum.
