I'm looking for a carolina skiff right now (used) and have come across a J16 with a 2000 nissan 25 2stroke e-start remote. My concern is...the boat has been USED. The owner is a regular on a fishing forum I frequent and keeps the boat hanging (out of water) and fishes it frequently. He says the water pump impeller has never been changed (lower unit has never been off). The motor was bought new in '02 so that's 4 years of salt use. Assuming it was flushed regularly, is there anything I need to look at other than the general appearance/performance of the motor?

One more thing...another j16 I'm looking at is a creampuff compared to this one...but it has a 2000 johnson 25 on it (e-start, remote, tilt, trim). I'm reluctant to go with the 2000 after a search pulls up several threads with similar problems with this year/model. Any reason to think otherwise?

The 2000 OMC engines had a QC problem with poor build quality. It was not a design problem. The designs were excellent. The employees were angry and didn't much care if they built them well or not.

I would expect an engine that had been in use for 5 years to have any build errors fixed by now.

That makes sense to me JB. I'll consider this boat...I especially like the tilt and trim option.
