Sand and Paint ?

If the paint on the hull (I have no idea what it is) is in good condition etc. no cracks peeling and so on. Do I have to strip this off? Or can I do a good sand job, prime, block and then apply Awl Grip?

Yes as long as you seal it. You can use the 3m scotch pads seal and paint.
