Hey guys.
I took my boat to a boat shop that just so happen to hire a new fiberglass guy. This guy seemed to know what he was doing when I spoke to him, however I would later find out that he was a complete moron. I simply wanted him to sand the boat to remove a little boat rash and oxidation that has build up with time. Long story short he had to come out and buff the marks out again that he left from sanding the fiberglass before. Well now above the rub rail on both sides of my boat are scratches that have no shine what so ever. I use a variable buffer with compound but had no luck. I believe he stopped at 1000 grit sanding so I figured it would be an easy job. Wrong! Do you guys think if a used a high speed buffer with Meguirs stage 12 rubbing compound I should bring the scratches out.

I spent $850 dollars for this guy to bring the shine back to my boat.

If anyone has any suggestion Please help.

Depends on how old and how bad the gel coat is. Assuming it was good, just showing a little age, it should buff out nice, especially after going over with 1000 grit.

You should be able to buff it out using regular polishing compound (rubbing is too rough) on a buffer. If not, then something is amiss.

BTW, for $850 I would expect the boat to shine. Have you spoke with the owner of the shop about the condition of the shine? I would think its worth pursuing some more to either get money back or the job done right before doing it yourself.

I'm sorry, I think that the shop that did the work should stand behind the work. But I did my boat and finished with 1000 grit and buffed it out with Maguires diamond cut and turned out great. But for that kink of money you should be satisfied with the out come. Not sure how big your boat is but mine is a 24 ft and thats lots of work.

No. I dont agree with you guys at all. I think he can either talk to the owner about the situation or take the matter into his own hands. I dont think you get to do both. If you have already done some work on it yourself now, you have taken over responsibility for the situation. I dont see how you can now lay this at the shop's feet. I do hope you get the look you were shooting for no matter how you get there.
