I have a dewalt 4 1/2 grinder, i am wondering what is a good pad to use. I see loop , Velcro pads. Some have holes in them? is that for dust escape. What would be the best sanding setup, 6" with Velcro loop pads my local HD had a large supply of 5" and 6" sanding disks with holes in them.
I had a Milwaukee 8" sander/polisher but it got dropped off a roof doing chimney work and broke. (why do i still let people borrow stuff?)

The 4 1/2" grinder might be too fast to sand with unless you get a flap disk. Are you looking to do finish work?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

A grinder should really be used with flap discs for doing the heavy grinding work, a dual action for normal sanding ( finish work ). The paper with the holes in it are designed for dual action vibe sanders that have either a dust collection bag or a vacuum connection ( or both like my Porter Cable ).

You really need to tell us what kind of sanding and/or grinding you plan on doing, it makes a huge difference in what you should get.

finish sanding before paint. I did my control panel with a grinder disk but it has gouge marks and uneven spots so i need something to make it even an dlook good.

If your going to do finish sanding and you have An ample supply of air you might want to look into a National Detroit DA. It has about a 6' disk thats orbital. I used it on my wood boat and did a great job.
Just a thought.
Good Luck, Beef

Re: sanding? pads senders disks....???

foe finishing sading.....i use two different sanders......

the big makita vari speed sander polisher.....(there is a copy of them at horbor freight for under 60 bux).....

and a little orbital palm sander with the dust collector...

and all the above posts are true....so read them all again...

the hull extension thread has detailed pics of all the different sanders and grinders normally used in boat building.....including the proper attachments including the foam pads and different crits to use for what job.

just see the index on the first page and go to sanding the gellcoat.

cheers

IF you have the air, definitely go with an air powered sander. Gets the job done much more quickly, which lets you concentrate harder on getting a nice finish, since you have to do it for a shorter time :)

But you need a big compressor... most RO air sanders need something like 7 CFM at 90 PSI continuous to operate, which means usually a large stationary compressor. A smaller one with a tank really won't work, sanding for a couple minutes and stopping for an air recharge gets old very quickly. My compressor (which ATM is a frankenstein beast made from two older compressors) does about 4 CFM at 120PSI, which isn't enough to run continuously. It's good for lots of tasks, just not cutoff tools and sanders.

Personally I use a 7 inch grinder with a sandblaster (3m) flap disk for really tough, rough shaping.. the SB disks hold up 3x longer than any other I've tried, and come with a quick change adapter.

For general sanding I have the variable speed HF polisher, 7 inch.. I got it for $35 on sale. It uses the hook and loop pads, which are hard to find except at HF, so I'm going to put a 6 inch rubber pad on it for stick-on disks... it uses a standard 5/8"-11 arbor.

For small jobs I use a hand RO sander, harbor freight $20, with a vacuum attachment.

I also bought the OSHA collars for my grinder (on clearance at HF now) that let me attach a vacuum, and I use one to suck dust whenever I can, since otherwise it gets everywhere, makes you itch, and worst of all gets into your lungs.

Final comment: Skimp on the sander equipment if you need to, but buy the good quality sanding media. You'll be glad you did. Using good quality 3m or other paper or disks makes the job go faster, come out better looking, and the supplies last a lot longer. I use the 3m sandblaster stuff, or the bright green paper they sell for sanding car finishes.

Re: sanding? pads senders disks....???

My big compressor **** the bed and had to get rid of it, so all i have is a $100 craftsman untill i can get a new one. I have all types of air tools but no $$ for a comporressor. It had 14cfm@90 wich was ushualy enough.
I am probably getting a palm orbital and bigger HF sander polisher 7".
Thanks Matt
