coils & condencers points could be a challange & impellers, old cork floats and things like that usally need help. Some old maytag engines tricks work for the wico ignitions, like using a capacitor inplace of a condencer. there are a couple web site's that have info, http://www.scott-atwater.com/History.htm another for parts one is http://www.scottatwaterinfo.com/ $$$$ ouch!
I have gained a tribe of Scott Atwaters & Firestones from 1946-1956 and I'm finding it fairly easy to overcome the challanges except thoso darn bail a matics are a PITA and if can't overcome the $$ for impeller's I'm going to learn how to make the darn things myself!, I think the most expensive item so far has been is the rubber water pump Impellers @ $50 homemade, as quoted to me, But I say Go for it... repair & parts information is available.

PS some of the older 3.6 or 3.5 461's had metal impellers, mine are 462 firestone SA's 3.5's and they have Metal impellers

Re: Saw some scott-atwaters on craigslist

I have two Scott 3.6 motors; a 48 and a 62 (Scotty). Both were seized and I managed to get the freed up. The 62 looked brand new. I think they're nice motors but I'm having troubles with the carburetors (as well as with my half dozen Firestone/Scott 5 horse 50's motors). I paid 25 for the 48 and traded a 61 Sea King 25 (with problems) for the 62. I don't know which of us got the worse end of the deal. Carbs/fuel problems seem to be the focus.

As for the ignition. I've had many an old Wico ignition take right off after a cleanup. On the 62 I had to do an OMC coil transplant. On the 48 only a cleanup was necessary; go figure. This will work for all Scott /Firestone motors if you have the right donor metal field. Even if you don't (if you can find one) you can replace the (larger) field with the one that accepts the OMC coil.

My condolences to mrcrabs for the 'tribe' he picked up. Watch out or they'll reproduce if stored close enough to each other. I found about a half dozen in my shed.

Good luck with the motor. Other than the (Tillitson) carburetor nightmares I'm still learning how to solve they're a pretty neat motor. Keep us posted.

I separate each Scott Atwater's with a Eska Gamefisher...they seem to be prejuduced against each other and won't cross, :)

lucky me I picked up a complete new OS ignition tune up kit, 2 sets of points & condencers for the wico twin and carb rebuild kit for the Tolston MD carb and if I figured in shipping and compare to todays money I gave twice what the guy gave in 57, got it in the original Atwater mailer post marked 1957... plus bills of sales from 57-61 , I found a original 46-56 shop manual for $30 down in Texas and I have one on CD from a friend that saved the day, the original shop manual has part number prices from back in the day....$1.35 for a impeller in 1956
