Scanreg/fix??

Have I got this right for windows 2000 sp4 or should I update to sp5 before running
F8>>safe mode>>start>>run>> type . scanreg/fix
or is the route wrong .......thanks

Not sure about that, but you can start in safe mode with command prompt and type chkdsk /F that will check your file system.

It's for fixing bad values in the registry,bringing this old lap up to date what a chore,not updated since 2000

Man I've done lots I'm in the final stages,just want to clean some funk out of the registry and it's good to go

Why do you believe you need to clean up the registry? Are you geting errors? Programs not running correctly?

In XP pro if I do a scanreg /? I get C:\Documents and Settings\user>scanreg /?
'scanreg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

What do you get if you run "scanreg /?" ?

Scanreg is not an NT tool (i.e. Win 2K, Win NT 3/4, Win XP). It is only for Win 98 and ME. Even if you find a copy of scanreg from an older machine, I wouldn't use it. NT registries are quite different from '98.

To answer your question, I always try to get the latest SP on as quick as possible. I think the latest one for w2k is sp4.

Thanks BoatBuoy your right ,this lap had win 98 before and it had the Ms utility,you got me on the right track now.Guess I'LL search C and see what's still hanging on

Yea, SP4 was the last service pack for Win2k....MS dropped any plans for SP5......

There is a post-SP4 security patch rollup that you may want to apply after applying SP4.
